Hanna Maarit Jauhiainen

Figurative Expressionist ©

Hanna Maarit Jauhiainen (b. 1968, Finland) is a figurative expressionist whose artistic work is built on the tension between intuition, material and inner world of experience. She works primarily with oil paints on pinewood, utilizing the sgraffito technique, in which marks carved into the paint surface act as both visual structure and carriers of meaning.

Jauhiainen's work is situated in the tradition of figurative expressionism, where external form is subordinate to internal reality. Her works deal with universal human experiences: compassion, vulnerability, and the relationship between humans and nature and their own bodily existence. A thematic cross-cutting issue is the position and experience of women in Western culture.

In 2026, Jauhiainen will delve into the theme of The Gaze of the Aging Woman. In her work, she explores the cultural expectations that women face as they age, as well as the resistance and wisdom that emerges when a woman detaches herself from external definition and turns towards her own inner knowledge.

Jauhiainen is represented at Galleria G12 in Helsinki. Her works are in private collections in Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia and the United Kingdom.
